Music Therapy

Music Therapy offers a safe, secure, and non-judgmental space for exploration, expression and personal development. Central to how therapy works is the therapeutic relationship between client, therapist and music.

Music therapy uses music and talking to facilitate and support the client in a person centered way. This is developed through engagement in musical interaction and discussion. Techniques include song writing, improvisation, lyric analysis, music making and listening to music. The therapist takes cues from the client when choosing how to interact, develop and hold the therapeutic relationship.

Using elements such as rhythm, tempo, texture, and melody, the therapist seeks to establish an interaction, a shared musical experience, leading to the pursuit of therapeutic goals. Possible reasons for referral include early intervention, mental health support, IEP-individualised goals and attachment-based therapy. Therapeutic support is offered to all ages.

It was an honour to join the MAPP Centre team in 2016 following 9 years working extensively in various clinical and educational settings, in the fields of autism, trauma and mental health. Before moving fully into private practice I had the privilege of supporting children and their families affected by attachment and early childhood mental health in marginalised urban areas. With many years’ experience with children and adolescents with ASD and Asperger Syndrome, I was invited to present about Music Therapy at the inaugural Autism Conference in Cork in October 2016. Working with the MA in music therapy at UL I offer placements and supervision to students and graduates thereafter.

Within the MAPP Centre’s holistic model of care I hope to promote communication, connection, and positive health for all those I work with.
