Art Therapy
Art therapy helps the client to express their thoughts and feelings through the use of art materials, symbolic imagery and within the therapeutic relationship. Art Therapy encourages self-expression and emotional wellbeing while also nurturing imagination and creativity.
Art Therapy facilitates symbolic communication through the language of visual art and speaks to us in ways that words do not. Through art thoughts, experiences and emotions can be more easily expressed, witnessed and understood.
The development of a trusting therapeutic relationship is central to the healing work so that the individual can come up with their own meaning and reflections and develop new coping mechanisms.
The experience of Art making including constructing, mixing, sculpting, painting, drawing encourages the participant to take an active role and develop confidence and problem solving strategies. Art making can be soothing, stress and anxiety reducing and assist in emotional healing and integration. Although it may be enjoyable it is not an art class and no previous experience of art is required

I work in private practice in both Ballincollig and Bantry.
I am a registered and accredited member of IACAT and qualified as an Art Psychotherapist in 2004 from CIT/University of Hertfordshire and have been practising since then.
I was initially employed as Art Therapist for Cope Foundation while additionally focusing on private practice. In 2013 I co- founded the MAPP Centre Cork, a professional therapeutic centre which offers creative and emotional support to children, teenagers and adolescents and adults through music, art, play and psychotherapy. In addition to private referrals from parents I receive referrals from numerous social work departments, schools, G.Ps family resource centres, GALs and other organisations. I also provide supervision and therapeutic support to students undertaking the Art Therapy course at Crawford/CIT and to qualified therapists. I have been employed by organisations to provide both individual and group Art Therapy sessions in the area of domestic violence, the elderly and disability and have given numerous creative workshops and therapeutic servicers within community organisations and schools. I believe in the curative and expressive qualities of the creative experience, the therapeutic relationship and the wisdom and authenticity of the children, teenagers and adults that I am privileged to work with. I am also a parent of 4 children and appreciate and understand the challenges and treasures within family life.
